Students provide photographic materials for all photography production courses, including film, photographic paper, certain specialized chemicals, fully adjustable roll film or view camera and transportable digital media when required. There is a $15 fee for laboratory materials for each photography production course. In motion picture production courses, students provide their own filmstock, processing, recording materials, and editing supplies. There is a $50 equipment rental fee for each film production course. In courses which include analysis and screening of a number of films, a $10 screening fee will be accessed. Students may also be required to purchase texts for various courses.

CP 401-3 
 
Large Format Photography 
Introduction to the aesthetics and techniques of large format (sheet film cameras) photography with emphasis on personal expression and commercial/professional applications. 
• Students purchase texts and provide photographic materials. 
• $15 for additional laboratory materials. 
• Prerequisite: 320 and consent of department. 
 
CP 402-6 (3,3) 
 
Sensitometry 
An advanced course taught in two semesters covering the technical and visual applications of the black and white process. The initial semester deals primarily with controls over the photographic negative, the Zone System, Density Parameters and practical chemistry. The second semester encompasses all the factors related to the production of the silver print. Topics covered are materials, chemistry, equipment and the aesthetics of photographic printing. 
• The two semesters are sequential and must be taken in order. 
• $15 laboratory fee. 
• Prerequisite: 320 and consent of department.

Introduction to the Studio 
Problems and possibilities in the aesthetics and techniques of studio photography: lighting, visual perception, environment, history, theory. 
• Students purchase texts and provide photographic materials. 
• $15 laboratory fee.  
• Prerequisite: 320 and consent of department.  
 
CP 421-6 (3,3) 
 
Experimental Photographic Techniques 
Experimental approaches to the creation of photographic images in the camera. 
• Students provide materials and may be required to purchase texts. 
• $15 laboratory fee. 
• Prerequisite: 322 and consent of department. 
 
CP 426-3 
 
Non-Silver Photography 
Intensive introduction to hand-applied emulsions of cyanotype, Vandyke brownprinting, gum printing, etc. 
• Students purchase materials and may purchase texts.  
• $15 laboratory fee.  
• Prerequisite: 322 and consent of department. 
 
CP 427-3 
 
Advanced Color Photography 
Advanced study and production of color photographs with emphasis on experimental techniques using Kwik Proof and other forms of photo-mechanical reproduction. 
• Students provide materials and may purchase texts. 
• $15 laboratory fee.  
• Prerequisite: 322 and consent of department. 
 
CP 429-3 to 6 (3,3) 
 
Studio Workshop 
An intensive workshop focusing on current trends in photography. Topics have included landscape photography, architectural photography, environmental portraiture and imagemaking, among others. 
• Students provide photographic materials and may purchase texts.  
• $15 laboratory fee.  
• Prerequisite: 322 and consent of department.

Applied Photography I 
An introduction to the theory, practice and professional responsibilities of contemporary commercial photography. Students produce a portfolio that surveys commercial applications. Areas of study include advertising, editorial and industrial components. 
• Students provide materials and may purchase additional equipment.  
• $15 laboratory fee.  
• Prerequisite: 320 and consent of the department.

Applied Photography II 
An advanced investigation into the principles outlined in 405. Students pursue a specific portfolio application throughout the course.

CP 435-3 
 
Photography and the Mass Media 
Exploration of the use, context, and meaning of photography in the mass media. The photograph as a communications tool will be evaluated along with the role and responsibility of the photojournalist. Students will apply theoretical concepts through group and individual assignments. 
• Students purchase texts and provide photographic materials. 
• $15 laboratory fee. 
• Prerequisite: 320 and consent of department. 
 
CP 436-3 
 
Documentary Photography: Method, Format and Distribution 
Exploration of the techniques, history and contemporary context of documentary photography. Audience, publication and distribution of documentary projects will be addressed. Each student will produce an in-depth documentary photographic project. 
• Students purchase texts and provide photographic materials. 
• $15 laboratory fee. 
• Prerequisite: 322 and consent of department. 
 
CP 449-3 
 
Survey of Film History 
Intensive study of major historical periods of narrative cinema, including technological developments, national cinema movements, aesthetic traditions, economic and political determinations and concerns of film historiography. 
• Prior completion of 360 is strongly recommended. 
• $10 screening fee. 
 
CP 452-3 
 
Screenwriting 
A study of screenplay structure, from idea development through first draft, for feature-length, classically-structured scripts and short subjects. Includes out-lines/treatments, scene work, character development and formatting. Students will be required to work on original scripts. 
• Prerequisite: 355, junior standing, or consent of the instructor. 
 
CP 454-3 
 
Animated Film Production 
Practical course for visual expression exploring various animation techniques: developmental, filmographic, rear lit, cut out, line, cel, etc. 
• Students purchase texts, art supplies, film materials and processing.  
• $10 equipment usage fee. 
• Prerequisite: 355 and/or consent of department. 
 
CP 461-3 
 
History of the Documentary Film (1875-1960) 
The development of the non-fiction film. This study will include early sequential photography, the beginnings of cinema, early ethnographic film, institutional documentaries, The Film Front, World War II documentaries, the Free Cinema Group and close with early works in the direct cinema style. 
• Students purchase text. 
• $10 screening fee.  
 
CP 462-3 
 
History of the Documentary Film (1960-Present) 
An examination of styles in documentary film based upon historical precedent, technological changes, responses to theoretical and ethical questions and the influence of theatrical distribution and television. 
• $10 screening fee. 
• Completion of 461 recommended. 
 
CP 463-3 
 
History of the Experimental Film 
Study of experimentation in cinema from the turn of the century to contemporary avant-garde films. 
• Students purchase text. 
• $10 screening fee.  
 
CP 466-3 to 6 (3,3) 
 
Film Styles and Genres 
Intensive study of a specific body of films grouped by similarities in style, genre, period or cultural origin. Emphasis is on historical, theoretical and critical issues. Topics vary. Sample topics: the science fiction film; the French new wave; Third World cinema; surrealism in film. 
• May be taken two times if topic differs. 
• Prior completion of 360 is strongly recommended. 
• $10 screening fee. 
 
CP 467-3 to 6 (3,3) 
 
Film Authors 
Intensive study of the work of one or more film authors (directors, screenwriters, etc.). Emphasis is on historical, theoretical and critical issues. Topics vary. Sample topics: the films of Alfred Hitchcock; the films of Chantal Akerman; the films of Andrei Tarkovsky. Maybe taken two times if topic differs. 
• Prior completion of 360 is strongly recommended. 
• $10 screening fee. 
 
CP 470 a,b.c - 3 to 12 (3,3,3,3) 
 
Advanced Topics 
An advanced course concentrating on special topics in cinema and photography. 
 
(a) Advanced studies in cinema history/theory. Sample topics: visualizing the body; feminist film theory; surveillance and the cinema. 
• $10 screening fee. 
 
(b) Advanced topics in film production. Topics offered include motion picture sound workshop, narrative film workshop. 
• $50 equipment fee. 
 
(c) Advanced studies in photography. Topics offered have included publication and presentation, digital imaging, multi-image, narrative tableau, among others. 
• $15 laboratory fee. 
 
(d) Advance studies in interdisciplinary topics. 
• Letter designation may be repeated if topic varies, though no more than six semester hours will be counted for graduate credit. 
• Prerequisite: Consent of department. 
 
CP 472-3 to 6 (3,3) 
 
Problems in Creative Production: Cinema 
An intensive examination, through readings, screenings, and filmmaking, of a cinematic genre, style, movement, or technical challenge. Theory is combined with practice, resulting in a group film production. Previous problems studied have been the pseudo-documentary, optical printing, 35mm filmmaking and film as performance. 
• Topics vary: may be repeated for a total of six credit hours. 
• $50 equipment usage fee. 
• Prerequisite: Consent of department. 
 
CP 496a-3 
 
Film Production III 
 
Advanced production by individuals or crews of 16mm sound films from pre-production through shooting. Intensive study of budgeting, production planning, scripting, casting, location and studio shooting techniques, equipment rental, lighting and double system sound filming. 
• Students provide film stock, processing and sound materials. 
• $10 equipment usage fee. 
• Prerequisite: 356 and consent of department. 
 
CP 496b-3 
 
Film Production IV 
Continuation of 455 through post production to a first answer print. Intensive study of editing, sound mixing, laboratory procedures and distribution. 
• Students provide editing and sound materials and are responsible for laboratory costs. 
• $10 equipment usage fee. 
• Prerequisite: 455 and consent of department.
