American Advertising Federation (AAF)
The American Advertising Federation is a national association with 52,000 professional members.The SIU collegiate chapter is one of over 200 chapters nationwide. Aside from a large networking database, the club helps develop and prepare its members for careers in the integrated marketing communications field through workshops, speaker programs, community service projects, and "shadow days." The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) meets weekly in the Communications Building. It sponsors speakers, workshops, field trips, social events, and partakes in service projects. NABJ is the largest association of journalists of color in the world and has professional chapters throughout the United States. It offers a series of internship and scholarship opportunities.

Broadcasting Service
The Broadcasting Service of SIUC operates public broadcasting stations WSIU and WUSI, as well as radio stations WSIU-FM and WUSI-FM. All stations are affiliated with a variety of national organizations including the Public Broadcasting Service and National Public Radio. SIUC's Broadcasting Service is nationally admired for its policy of providing professional experience for students, who are encouraged to participate actively in all station operations. Working with modern equipment, in actual on-air broadcasting, students acquire practical skills and develop creative ability in the company of experts. They can take part in the creation of radio and television programming, and can compete for paid student crew positions. http://www.wsiu.org/
Chairman's Council
Chairman's Council is an honorary society for Radio-Television students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or over. Chairman's Council students are invited to help with recruiting and work on other projects for the R-T Department.
Cinema & Photography Student Organization (CPSO)
Members in CPSO are all Cinema & Photography students, with four elected representatives alternating as voting members of the Department. Along with providing student input on important departmental issues, CPSO assists in raising funds for the Big Muddy Film Festival, schedules guest lecturers in both cinema and photography, and organizes an alternative film series which screens classic films free of charge to the university and local community.
Daily Egyptian Newspaper
The campus newspaper, the Daily Egyptian, is a student-run operation. Paid student positions are available in the business, advertising, production, printing, news reporting, and photography areas. http://www.dailyegyptian.com/
Film Alternatives
Formed in 1991, Film Alternatives works to increase exhibitions of alternative films. It adopted the Big Muddy Film Festival, a week-long celebration of independent film and video making which is held on the SIUC campus. In addition to the annual festival, Film Alternatives' members coordinate such programs as the Women in the Director's Chair Tour, the Student Academy Awards, the series "Visionary Works: Independent Film and Video Makers," and the Little Big Muddy Film Festival, a showcase and competition of films and videos produced by SIUC students.
International Television Association (ITVA)
ITVA members meet regularly to explore the growing areas of non-broadcast television. The chapter maintains close contact with national professional organizations and is involved with several on-campus productions each year.
Alpha Epsilon Rho
The local chapter of AER, the National Broadcasting Society, is nationally affiliated. With a long and strong history, the chapter provides a variety of programs that include orientation activities for new students, guest speakers, meetings with professionals, and leadership development opportunities. Members attend the regional and national conventions, where they make contacts with other student groups and with professional broadcasters and educators.
PhotoGenesis
The student photographic organization PhotoGenesis provides activities in conjunction with the academic program. The group is responsible for many ongoing activities within the Cinema and Photography department as well as helping with guest artists, exhibits of student work, and field trips to galleries. PhotoGenesis meets twice a month during the Spring and Fall semesters.
Radio Active
Students interested in radio production get involved in the writing, producing, and performing of radio commercials and programs through membership in Radio Active. The organization serves clients on and off campus and its work can be heard on radio stations throughout southern Illinois. In addition, a Radio Active student sales staff helps the club acquire new business.
Saluki Advertising Agency (SAA)
Saluki Advertising is a student run advertising agency which works with area businesses to develop and design retail advertising materials.
Students benefit from this real world experience in producing materials to add to their creative portfolios. Income generated from such work is used to send members each spring to a major advertising agency or supplier. Previous visits include Coca Cola and CNN.
SIU.EDU
SIU.EDU introduces students to the world of Internet technologies. Web page design, electronic commerce, and teleconferencing are some of the subjects covered in weekly workshops. Members also build home pages for campus organizations. http://www.siu.edu
Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ)
Society of Professional Journalists is a national organization geared toward setting the standards that journalists follow, as well as providing professional advice and job search help to others in their field. The SPJ student chapter openly discusses issues that journalists face every day such as, cameras in the courtroom and privacy laws. The group also brings professionals from all walks of journalism to SIUC to interact with and give advise to students. Members can participate in workshops available at regional and national conventions.
Students in the Illinois News Broadcasters Association (SINBA)
The first student group affiliated with the Illinois News Broadcasters Association, SINBA brings together students with career interests in broadcast journalism. The local chapter hosts professional news, weather, and sports broadcasters to attend regular meetings. Members work on various projects on behalf of the parent INBA organization and attend two statewide conventions each year. In 1989, the SIU chapter formulated a statewide student news awards competition.
Southern Illinois Radio Information Service (SIRIS)
For several hours each day SIRIS volunteers read books, magazines, and newspapers to visually impaired and shut-in individuals in and around Carbondale, who listen on special receivers.
TELPRO
A student group that has developed a strong reputation for quality, TELPRO is often called upon by regional agencies to produce special programs and television spot announcements. It has produced public service safety spots for area police agencies, commercials for local businesses, and special programs on subjects that include international students, child abuse, and alcohol abuse. TELPRO won first place in the Financial Aid Awareness PSA Contest; their spot aired on numerous television stations.
WIDB Radio Station
The campus radio station, WIDB, is operated and managed by students. WIDB broadcasts 24 hours a day from the SIUC Student Center to campus residence halls, recreation areas, the Student Center and via the Internet. WIDB Radio just celebrated its 25th anniversary and continues to offer students practical experience in radio announcing, programming, news, promotion, public relations, production, and commercial sales. http://www.siu.edu/~widb
Women in Communication, Inc. (WICI)
This organization offers women in the communications field the opportunity to network with professionals in Chicago, St. Louis, and with other national chapters of WICI. WICI is over 80 years old and supplies students with internship and job contacts. Students are invited to attend a professional mentor day in the fall and a career day in Chicago in March. The local club hosts a Women's Expo every spring.
