Programs—Ph.D.
What sets you apart from other programs?
We are a college-wide, interdisciplinary graduate program which approaches the study and practice of media from a range of perspectives that include the social sciences, humanities and the liberal arts, business, and artistic practice. This means that you can take advantage of the scholarly, professional, and artistic experience of our faculty in the Department of Cinema and Photography, the School of Journalism, and the Department of Radio-Television in developing a program of study that could potentially encompass the study and practice of media.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been designated as a New Media Center. State-of-the-art interactive multimedia labs are available for research projects and interactive multimedia development. Students have the opportunity to plan and organize the Big Muddy Film Festival, an international festival that includes competition screenings, documentary and narrative feature screenings, panel discussions, and guest artist presentations of independent, nontraditional films. Students also have opportunities to work with WSIU Public Broadcasting, which operates two PBS-affiliated television stations and two NPR-affiliated FM radio stations. There are extensive facilities for audio, cinema, multimedia, graphics, photography, and video production.
The College of Mass Communication and Media Arts also houses the Global Media Research Center. The Center is designed to foster a core group of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students engaged in substantive research initiatives in global media; to establish national and international partnerships for research and creative exchange; to provide an active visiting scholars and artists program; to develop international exchange programs for faculty and students; and to work with both the campus and the local community on fostering the discussion of global media topics.
What is the focus of your Ph.D program?
The Ph.D. program engages students in the interdisciplinary study of the social, economic, political, aesthetic, cultural, historical, legal/regulatory, and international aspects of mass communication. Students receive a solid theoretical and methodological foundation through a flexible, College-wide program designed to produce outstanding scholars and teachers who make significant contributions to the understanding of mass media and their utilization.
How long does it take to get a degree?
In general, the MA and M.S. require 2 years to complete, the MFA requires 3 years, and the PhD 4 years.
What if I have other questions?
You should be able to have most of your questions answered by looking at our webpage http://mcmagrad.siu.edu. If you cannot find the answer to your question, please send your inquiries to mcmagrad@siu.edu We will be happy to help you.
Are there prerequisite courses?
Most of our theory courses do not have prerequisites. However, students without a degree in mass communications, media studies, film/photography/radio and television or related field, such as English or Art History or professional media experience will be required to set up a program with the Director of Graduate Studies in consultation with other faculty members to remedy any deficiencies.
Do you provide assistantships?
We provide four years of full support for doctoral students, one year more than most programs in our field.
