Programs—M.F.A.
What sets you apart from other programs?
We are a college-wide, interdisciplinary graduate program which approaches the study and practice of media from a range of perspectives that include the social sciences, humanities and the liberal arts, business, and artistic practice. This means that you can take advantage of the scholarly, professional, and artistic experience of our faculty in the Department of Cinema and Photography, the School of Journalism, and the Department of Radio-Television in developing a program of study that could potentially encompass the study and practice of media.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been designated as a New Media Center. State-of-the-art interactive multimedia labs are available for research projects and interactive multimedia development. Students have the opportunity to plan and organize the Big Muddy Film Festival, an international festival that includes competition screenings, documentary and narrative feature screenings, panel discussions, and guest artist presentations of independent, nontraditional films. Students also have opportunities to work with WSIU Public Broadcasting, which operates two PBS-affiliated television stations and two NPR-affiliated FM radio stations. There are extensive facilities for audio, cinema, multimedia, graphics, photography, and video production.
The College of Mass Communication and Media Arts also houses the Global Media Research Center. The Center is designed to foster a core group of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students engaged in substantive research initiatives in global media; to establish national and international partnerships for research and creative exchange; to provide an active visiting scholars and artists program; to develop international exchange programs for faculty and students; and to work with both the campus and the local community on fostering the discussion of global media topics.
What is the focus of your MFA program?
Recently the faculty created an exciting and visionary proposal to reorganize the M.F.A. program which has been approved by the University. The new program eliminates the current concentrations in cinema and photography and takes a broader interdisciplinary approach to reflect changes in fields where traditional lines separating various media have blurred. The new program emphasizes the artistic development of the individual student and the creation of quality artistic works in photography, film, video, sound, new media, and interdisciplinary media. You can begin taking classes in this new program in fall 2005, although it will not be completely in place until fall 2006.
What is required for the portfolio?
Prospective students must present evidence of exceptional talent and/or potential in one or two media pursuits in the degree program. Applicants should include an example of work that demonstrates their competency. This evidence will ordinarily consist of a portfolio of photographs or digitally generated art works, one or more films, videos, sound works, multimedia productions, web art projects, or other evidence of artistic potential. Applicants must clearly indicate their role(s) in any project submitted
How long does it take to get a degree?
Our programs require extensive research. In general, the MA and M.S. require 2 years to complete, the MFA requires 3 years, and the PhD 4years.
