Programs—M.S. Professional Media and Media Management Studies

What sets you apart from other programs?

We are a college-wide, interdisciplinary graduate program which approaches the study and practice of media from a range of perspectives that include the social sciences, humanities and the liberal arts, business, and artistic practice. This means that you can take advantage of the scholarly, professional, and artistic experience of our faculty in the Department of Cinema and Photography, the School of Journalism, and the Department of Radio-Television in developing a program of study that could potentially encompass the study and practice of media.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been designated as a New Media Center. State-of-the-art interactive multimedia labs are available for research projects and interactive multimedia development. Students have the opportunity to plan and organize the Big Muddy Film Festival, an international festival that includes competition screenings, documentary and narrative feature screenings, panel discussions, and guest artist presentations of independent, nontraditional films. Students also have opportunities to work with WSIU Public Broadcasting, which operates two PBS-affiliated television stations and two NPR-affiliated FM radio stations. There are extensive facilities for audio, cinema, multimedia, graphics, photography, and video production.

The College of Mass Communication and Media Arts also houses the Global Media Research Center. The Center is designed to foster a core group of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students engaged in substantive research initiatives in global media; to establish national and international partnerships for research and creative exchange; to provide an active visiting scholars and artists program; to develop international exchange programs for faculty and students; and to work with both the campus and the local community on fostering the discussion of global media topics.

What is the focus of your M.S. program in Professional Media and Management Studies?

This degree program provides students with an intellectual background in theory and critique of the communication industries as well as trains students with varied professional interests to establish careers in the communication industry. More specifically, this program aims to train intelligent, self aware, flexible graduates who will go on to becoming leaders in the communication industry.

What is the focus of your M.A. program in Theory and Research?

This concentration offers a broad overview of mass communication and media arts and their processes and effects in the larger social system. Graduates gain both an appreciation of the field's strengths and an understanding of its obstacles in being a force for social development. Areas in which this specialty is used include department-level leadership in the mass media industries, opinion research, commentary, critical theory, content analysis, and teaching. This concentration may lead to doctoral studies.

What are the differences between the M.A. and M.S. program?

The theory and research concentration provides training for students interested in professional media careers or for those whose interests are in teaching, scholarship, or applied research. Very often, those who graduate from the theory and research concentration go on to study for their Ph.D. Professional Media and Media Management Studies aims to train intelligent, self aware, flexible graduates who will go on to become leaders in the communications industry.

How long does it take to get a degree?

Our programs require extensive research. In general, the MA and M.S. require 2 years to complete, the MFA requires 3 years, and the PhD 4 years.
