Financial Assistance

What kind of financial support is available?

Competitive students are supported by research and teaching assistantships.
These assistantships include a tuition waiver. Ph.D. students are supported for four years, a year more than other programs in our field. The MFA students receive assistantships for three years with tuition waiver. Most of our master’ students also receive two years of assistantship with tuition waivers; many other programs do not provide help for master’s students. The majority of the assistantships are Research and Teaching Assistantships.

The Graduate School also offers a number of graduate fellowships. The numbers depend on the funds available for these awards each year. You can find more information about these at the University’s website at http://www.siu.edu/gradschl/underrepresented_fellowships.htm The guidelines for these fellowships are strictly enforced. Please pay special attention to the deadlines.

We provide generous scholarship and fellowship support to underrepresented minorities. You can find more information about minority assistantships at http://www.siu.edu/gradschl/underrepresented_fellowships.htm

The University provides generous support to underrepresented minority students including the PROMPT, Graduate Dean’s and Bridge to the Doctorate fellowships.

Will providing my own financial support increase my chances of admission?
In general, no. The GRE, GPA, portfolio (for the MFA), statement of purpose, research experience, professional experience, publications and recommendations are the main factors the Admission Committee use in making decisions on who to admit. However, if we have more students who are deemed worthy of admission than we have assistantship money, having funding from another source does allow us to admit additional worthy candidates.

What if I have other questions?

You should be able to have most of your questions answered by looking at our webpage http://mcmagrad.siu.edu. If you cannot find the answer to your question, please send your inquiries to mcmagrad@siu.edu We will be happy to help you.
