The Ph.D. program at the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts has given me the knowledge and the tools to explore the field of mass communication from a critical perspective. This program has provided exactly what I expected to gain from a graduate program in mass communication--the opportunity to study complex developments and phenomena in the world of communication today. Because of my special interest in international communication, I have to say that the diversity of courses and the versatile expertise of the graduate faculty made the process of learning an invaluable one. This is a program for those who like to take on a challenge and who, in the process of doing so, grow as scholars and as human beings.

When I looked for a Ph.D. program to attend, I considered two: University of Missouri-Columbia and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. I was looking for a top-quality program that would be flexible to my needs as a commuter student (I live and work full-time in St. Louis, Missouri). I couldn't be happier that I chose Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

When you are shopping for a computer, your first consideration is to see whether the computer is user-friendly. When you choose a mass communication Ph.D. program, you should give the priority to the question of whether the program is student-friendly. My three-year "empirical" experiences with the college-wide program at SIUC have supported the claim that the Ph.D. program at the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts is very student-friendly. The evidence includes the flexibility in choosing different emphasis areas you are interested in, the encouragement and readiness of the faculty in helping you to learn and the strong support from your classmates to cheer for your success and share in your feelings.

SIU was an awesome school that provided the flexibility for me to develop a unique program of study and to accomplish the course work and dissertation while teaching at another university. The graduate fellowships I received provided the necessary support to reach my goal.

The Ph.D. program at SIUC has introduced me to a vast array of knowledge with stellar instructors to guide my progress. My classes have challenged me to think in new ways and to evaluate problems using tools I did not know I possessed. I'm certain I chose the right school to continue my education.

I cannot say enough good things about Southern Illinois University Carbondale. From the first e-mail correspondence with Dr. Tom Johnson, I have been welcomed and assisted here in every way. I particularly like the personal attention from each Professor. In the Mass Communications & Media Arts area at SIUC, the Professors are helpful and professional. If you're looking for a program that values each student, this is the place. This university is large enough to provide great opportunities, yet small enough to give individual attention. I predict that if you come to this program, you will be glad you did.

You will be trained to appreciate the art of filmmaking as well as the theory and history of both national and international film. The program is well equipped for individual creativity utilizing both traditional film techniques and cutting edge digital technology.

As a woman of color who immigrated from South Korea in her early teens, I had to adapt and 'fit-in' quickly (thus re-creating self), had experienced the usual (but more excruciating) identity 'metamorphosis' along with many 'where are you from' confrontations, and was a victim of the society's/teenagers' cruel actions due to ignorance (making 'chink' faces, throwing rocks as if I am a sinner, etc.). I became quiet and small... The same continued until my awakening at SIU. The rural setting of Carbondale was not any different from the earlier years, however, at SIU, I was very fortunate to work with, and learn from, many outstanding professors and colleagues. During this 'awakening' period at SIU, I was no longer 'exotic' but creative, no longer a 'subservient' but defiant (proud) woman of color with confidence who re-captured the lost identity and re-told 'her-story and her-itage.' I am no longer small nor quiet.

The M.F.A. Program in Photography at SIU-C taught me how to think critically about the production, dissemination, and interpretation of photographic images. The curriculum provided me with a thorough understanding of the history of photography from a wide variety of perspectives. The program's year-long theoretical course covered a multitude of writings that further challenged me and continue to inform my artistic practice. I learned a great deal from my professors while I was a student at SIU-C, and my relationship with them did not end when I graduated. I continue to seek their advice, and thankfully, they continue to provide it.

The graduate program at the department of Cinema and Photography at SIU was a great experience for me. The program itself allowed me to explore and discover my own style of filmmaking. The students in the program were also an incredible source of inspiration. I will always remember our first class: there were ten students in the room and everybody had a different accent. This international perspective truly enriched my experience. It was exciting to have a film festival right there, where films from all over the world are screened. The Big Muddy Film Festival allowed me to build curatorial experience as well as be up to date with contemporary independent filmmaking. Finally, my years at SIU gave me the opportunity to develop my teaching experience. I knew I loved to teach film. I loved to be engaged in the creative process of students. Teaching at SIU made my transition to Lead Faculty at the Northwest Film Center much smoother. At the graduate program at SIU I made lifelong friends who are also my most trusted professional peers. It is also the place where I met my husband.

For me the greatest part of my MFA experience was the people. The faculty were supportive, knowledgeable, and committed to the success of the graduate students. I also found a great group of committed peers. Many of whom I am still in contact with today and are an important part of my professional network.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale's College of Mass Communication and Media Arts has offered a stimulating, challenging, and fun program in which I have grown as both a student and an artist. The faculty here help you find your own voice and encourage you to use it. Carbondale is a great little college-town, and I have been lucky enough to have lived here on a couple of different occasions. Personally, I came to SIUC to find some direction and feel that I am leaving here having been shown the way to several paths upon which I hope to soon embark.

The graduate program at Southern is flexible, which allows the student to tailor the program to their particular interests and goals. Additionally, there is a great combination of theory based and practical learning that prepares students for careers in the communication field. I had a wonderful experience at Southern and the graduate program definitely prepared me for my career in broadcast news.

The years I spent in the Master’s Program not only gave me a diploma, it gave me an impressive resume, and an entire network of graduates. When I graduated from SIU, I already had years of television experience under my belt producing, directing, editing, and broadcast operations skills at an actual "television station" - WSIU. It's because of this that I not only landed a job at a major market television station in Los Angeles, but also I moved up the ladder extremely quickly. The M.A. program was so intense, that it prepared me for what I do today. It gave me a diverse understanding of all aspects of production which gives me an edge over the competition.

SIU’s media theory and research program does an excellent job teaching both the quantitative and qualitative perspectives of media research. I have enjoyed all of my classes, which have taught valuable critical thinking skills. I am also pleased that the teachers offer many different perspectives, both liberal and conservative and both pro- and anti- large media corporations. I also love working with former Chicago Tribune reporter Bill Recktenwald, who now teaches here.

After one year in the Media Theory and Research program, I feel very comfortable and have made several friends, with whom I share ideas and laughter. I believe my study here has helped me further develop my analytic powers and given me a new outlet for my writing.

Students in the MCMA graduate program come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have expertise in many different areas of communication. The graduate students here are a friendly, supportive group of people and I would encourage anyone interested in applying for this program to meet with some of the current students in their area of interest.
